ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

In 2002, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Section staff of the National Library of Medicine classifies alternative medicine under the term complementary therapies. This is defined as therapeutic practices which are not currently considered an integral part of conventional allopathic medical practice. They may lack biomedical explanations but as they become better researched some, such as physical therapy, diet, and acupuncture, become widely accepted whereas others, such as humors or radium therapy, quietly fade away, yet are important historical footnotes. Therapies are termed as Complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as Alternative when used instead of conventional treatment.
The National Library of Medicine's previous definition was an unrelated group of non-orthodox therapeutic practices, often with explanatory systems that do not follow conventional biomedical explanations and non-orthodox therapeutic systems which have no satisfactory scientific explanation for their effectiveness.
Others define it as medical interventions not taught at United States medical schools or not available at United States hospitals.
The Panel on Definition and Description, CAM Research Methodology Conference, Office of Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, April 1995 defined complementary and alternative medicine as a broad domain of healing resources that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the politically dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period. CAM includes all such practices and ideas self-defined by their users as preventing or treating illness or promoting health and well being. Boundaries within CAM and between CAM domain and the domain of the dominant system are not always sharp or fixed.
Alternative therapies include, but are not limited to the following disciplines: folk medicine, herbal medicine, diet fads, homeopathy, faith healing, new age healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, and music therapy.
Studies suggest these therapies are sought out by individuals that have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, arthritis, cancer, back pain, and other medical conditions.

Role of GPx and TNF-alpha in Elderly Primigravidas

ABSTRACT
To probe the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity coupled to ROS and TNF-α levels in younger versus elderly primigravidas. Monocytes were isolated from blood of young and elderly primigravidas after 12 hrs, hrs and 14 days postpartum. Age-matched healthy female donors served as controls. Thereafter, the above monocytes were subjected to evaluation of GPx activity, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α and reactivity specificity towards anti-TNF-α antibody. Suppression in GPx activity with simultaneous enhancement of
TNF-α levels in monocytes was observed after 12 hrs and 24 hrs of spontaneous labor pain-induced maternal delivery through normal vaginal route. Conversely, an enhancement of GPx activity and decrease in TNF- levels were observed on day 14 of postpartum, thereby indicating reversal of the impaired neutralizing mechanisms. The antioxidant network combating ROS was stronger in younger primigravidas. Capability of TNF-α and ROS suppression was somewhat lesser in elderly primigravidas even 14 days of postpartum via normal vaginal route. The capability of GPx activity enhancement with simultaneous suppression in ROS and TNF-α, decreases in elderly primigravidas. This may act as one of the important parameters leading to a
variety of complications encountered by elderly primigravidas.
KEY WORDS
Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), Monocytes, Glutathione peroxidase.

‘National Symposium On Advances in Clinical Biochemistry – Biomarkers, Molecular Diagnosis and Quality Assurances & 1st UPACBICON 2008

‘National Symposium On Advances in Clinical Biochemistry – Biomarkers, Molecular Diagnosis and Quality Assurances & 1st U.P. Chapter of Association of Clinical Biochemist of India, Nov. 15th-16th, 2008’ (UPACBICON 2008).

INVITATION
Dear Colleague,
With immense pleasure, the Organizing Committee cordially invites you to participate in the National Symposium on Advances in Clinical Biochemistry - Biomarkers, Molecular Diagnosis and Quality Assurances & 1st U. P. Chapter of Association of Clinical Biochemist of India (UPACBICON 2008), being hosted by the Department of Biochemistry, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh on 15th-16th November 2008.
Aligarh is mainly famous for Aligarh Muslim University – an educational hub. It is one of the largest residential academic institutions in Asia, has twelve faculties, ninety eight departments of studies and thirty eight maintained institutions with around thirty thousand students on its roll from across the globe. Moreover, Aligarh Muslim University is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional hospitality.
Aligarh is situated 130 kms south east of Delhi, 85 kms from Agra and 65 kms from Mathura. It is on main Delhi Howrah Railway track and G. T. Road. Nearest Airports are at Delhi and Agra.
The rapidly expanding knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry coupled to Quality Assurances at the molecular level is providing new targets for disease characterization, early diagnosis, and drug discovery and development. The increasing knowledge of the pathway activation profile in a wide spectrum of diseases is yielding new targets but also new markers to select patients and guide and predict therapy efficacy. In summary, several decades of intensive research have originated multiple factors or biomarkers that are likely to be helpful in the diagnosis, characterization, and therapy selection of various types of diseased patients. A deep understanding of the relative relevance of each biomarker will be key to efficiently diagnose diseases and direct patients towards the drugs more likely to be of benefit based on their particular profile. The development of new preclinical models is of paramount importance to achieve these goals.
Thus, at the National level, in order to develop an in-depth understanding and to exchange novel ideas, which may unravel multiple serious issues in modern clinical biochemistry, it has been decided to convene a National Symposium on Advances in Clinical Biochemistry. This would be of immense help in providing a platform for medical and life sciences scientists across the nation to discuss, deliberate and evolve novel ideas in the field of clinical biochemistry involving molecular diagnosis and advanced new era biomarkers and quality control / assurances in order to combat wide spectrum of diseases. Also, during this National Symposium, we are lucky enough to be awarded by the Office Bearers of UP-ACBI to hold the First Uttar Pradesh Chapter of The Association of Clinical Biochemist of India, launched on 29th March 2008 at Lucknow during the National Workshop on Prevention of Lead Poisoning.
Your participation will be an honor for us. Please confirm your participation at the earliest to enable us to organize the things in a better way.
With warm personal regards
Dr. Najmul Islam
Organizing Secretary
